Rules Of The Road For Motorcycle Riders

Author: Erich Shrefler

Riding motorcycles is a popular and enjoyable pastime for many Americans, but it can be dangerous as well. Motorcycle riding requires training, knowledge and skill. Riding a motorcycle is totally different from driving a car or truck because motorcycles provide no protection against injury, making skill and training essential for your personal protection.

Being skilled and trained in motorcycle riding abilities ensures you are doing all you can to prevent an accident from changing your life forever or changing the lives of those you love.

Some Rules to Ride By

Following these rules to ride by will help ensure you ride safely and securely:

  • Attend a motorcycle training course

  • Choose a motorcycle that physically fits you

  • Practice! Practice! Practice!

  • Do not ride in a  car’s blind spot

  • Never ride without a helmet

  • Wear heavy boots, jackets, pants and gloves

  • Wear highly visible colors

  • Use headlights and signals both day and night

  • Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs

  • Treat other motorists with courtesy and respect

There are over four million motorcycles registered in the United States. Americans love to ride and this is evident by the rising popularity of motorcycle riding among people from all walks of life and income levels. Unfortunately, this rising popularity is also reflected in the growing number of motorcycle accident statistics, revealing over seventy-thousand motorcycle accidents every year with the majority resulting in serious injuries. The chances of sustaining a severe or fatal injury are higher for motorcycle riders than occupants of other types of motor vehicles, as high as 98%.

Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Most motorcycle accidents are caused by someone’s negligence that can change your life in less than a second. Some common causes of motorcycle accidents include:

  • Driver negligence/failure to yield or failure to see the motorcyclist

  • Hazardous weather conditions

  • Dangerous road hazards

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

The leading cause of motorcycle accidents is the failure of other drivers to see the motorcyclist. A good rule of the road then for a motorcyclist is to assume you are invisible to others and ride accordingly.

If you or a loved one was injured in a motorcycle accident you have a legal right to recover any damages suffered as a result of your injuries.
